Word: reducing file size for documents with inserted graphics

John reports he has a Word document in excess of 50MB which contains about 5 pictures and around 2 pages of text.

He needs to e-mail the document, but sending keeps failing because the document is so large.

Suggested fix is to copy the graphics out and use a picture editor such as Paint to save each as a JPEG, then send the files separately:
  1. Open Word and select one of the graphics. Copy it.
  2. Open Paint and Paste the graphic. (For Windows users, Paint is located on the menu at Start / Program Files / Accessories / Paint).
  3. Save the image in Paint as a JPEG file.
  4. Repeat the process for the remaining graphics.
  5. Save a new copy of the Word document with the pictures deleted from it.

Using WinZip

Whilst working for Kodak in 2003, I made a suggestion that colleagues should use some form of compression software to reduce the file size of attachments. I was asked to write a short introduction for people new to WinZip to encourage them to install and use the software on their pcs and laptops. Later visits to Kodak showed that the installation of WinZip was quite widespread. I don't know if I can claim the credit for that.

It's meant as an introduction, so prints on a single side of A4, and it contains a couple of pictures to illustrate what's going on the desktop.

Inserting a link into a blog comment

A link to another webpage can be included into a blog comment by typing in something like the following:

<a href="http://www.hertfordshire.freeserve.co.uk/Fairytales/index.html">Your comment</a>

You can just copy the line above, paste it and edit to start off.

In HTML the tag <a></a> stands for Anchor.

Windows Update Problem

My brother, known to everyone as Dod, was having a problem with Windows Update on his laptop. It runs under Windows XP. Foolishly I said I would try to help, and I took the laptop home. I then started a marathon session of research into the problem, following some very helpful instructions, and countless numbers of downloading updates and rebooting.

Eventually the problem was fixed. Sometimes there is no other way than to slog through these things.

How do you set up a website?

Background
I was asked recently by a neighbour of mine, Chris, how to set up a website. He had already had a go at creating a website through a simple website builder run by the local paper, but wanted to write something "without ads". I didn't know his level of expertise, and had to try to phrase my answer in a general way, at the same time trying to cover the technical issues he might come across.

My answer is found in the first comment.
